Fungi- Insect Mutualism

Easily overlooked are the organisms living beneath our feet. However, very necessary for a living, breathing and thriving Eco system. This project delves into the mutualistic symbiosis of fungi and insects. Handcrafted ceramics of the peculiar insects: the burying beetle (Silphidae), bark beetle (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), and the moth (Tortricidae), with mycellium growing from creeks and crevices.

Made for the art event “Kunst in Porres Toen” in Alteveer, The Netherlands

If curious about insect/fungi mutualism, I enquire you to read the Annual Review of Entomology: Ecology and Evolution of Insect–Fungus Mutualisms by Peter H.W. Biedermann and Fernando E. Vega.
